Space + Dirt

April 30th, 2008 · No Comments

In April of 2007 Ani visited the house that I grew up in for the first time. Umi was in her belly: she was drinking lots of milk at that time.

I think Ani mentioned the idea of living in a metropolis > space is a huge commodity. We trade space for choices- I was used to a lot of space as a child, although I have grown to become fond of the choices - Toronto is such a wonderful place with many cultural offerings. We enjoy those possibilities and have had a wonderful time introducing Umi to all that stuff. Maybe one day, we will have the choice of buying real estate in Outer Space…

I think how we use the chunks of space that we choose to carve out is more important than the amount. I try to take some tips from my father - he is very crafty with the earth. This is a picture of the bloom of his spring tulips, taken last spring:

Kids play with games more often than they play with dirt in my opinion. I am sure that is why we have lost respect for it, we came across a couple of kids near Trinity-Bellwoods Park a couple of weekends ago that hadn’t yet lost that respect.
